Day 8: Mission Impossible

Our task, should we choose to accept, is to get two vehicles and two trailers to Coober Pedy by 10am. The second vehicle is cactus and so it and its trailer will need to be towed over the entire 166km journey over unsealed, corrugated, cow dung covered, kangaroo infested road in the most isolated part of the country. Your team, consists of the 3 crack (and they have a lot) members of the team – The Assassin, Smokin’ Jo, and the team leader, Frodo. We have included their secret dossiers for your perusal.

As usual, this message will self destruct in 10 seconds…Good Luck!

The team set out in the early hours and were soon in trouble, overshooting the turnoff and continuing down the Oodnadatta Track. On realising our mistake, the disabled vehicle had to be towed in reverse back to the turnoff - hopefully we were now on the right track!

We continued on for a while until the cable snapped at which time Smokin Jo decided he would pull the vehicle himself. The Assassin used his advanced rope skills to tie a particular knot which would allow the team to reuse the cable when the knot was undone – of course we could not get it undone. This was also considered an opportune time to indulge in a nutritious breakfast of Summer Rolls.

Eventually, under Frodo’s inspired leadership and promise of a dust free ride (not!), we arrived in Coober Pedy with the Assassin having close shaves with a semi and a roundabout. The damaged vehicle was then taken to a garage where we will await the verdict on the possibility of its repair.

The team then managed laundry for the first time (including some interesting fossilized socks and took a tour of the Breakaways. In the process they came upon the Dingo Proof Fence built by miner Timothy Tam to keep the Victorians out.

In the morning, Frodo will continue his quest to repair the vehicle and we will then be on our way to Yulara.

Half Nelson finally contributes.....the relatively new tow rope having only been used to tow logs out creeks has been put to the ultimate test.....as Half Nelson can only speculate ..it has become obvious that there should have been a greater attendance and alot more note taking at the pre trip knot tying classes...or at least a second session on knot untying...to tie or not untie...that is indeed a question...as a reminder...its up the hole ...around the tree ..the back down the hole.....so get on with it.. broome is rebooked.... carry on...Half Nelson
