Day 9: Mechanics Log

Where we lose a vehicle, leave behind the mounds of Coober Pedy, uncover the latest eagles drug scandal, and come face to face with the buns of steel!

The day commenced with the news that the car that only a day before was cactus, was a lemon – so after many phone calls, we managed to procure a replacement. After many attempts at packing and repacking the vehicles, and much assistance and morning tea from Desert Traders, we finally departed on our 740 km journey to Yulara.

With Teflon and Wolverine on the bikes, we immediately encountered an eagle with attitude and an obvious substance abuse problem.

While Frodo and Smokin Jo decided to take time out for a picnic in Kulgera.

Also spotted en route was a road train carrying cattle giving us tips on the condition of the Tanami, while en route to the rock, Gal couldn’t help but point out each cow, tree, oncoming vehicle, and even the white lines on the road.

After much consultation between the drivers and the ring bearer,

and after passing increasingly interesting terrain with wildflowers in bloom, we finally completed our dash to Yulara.

Many congratulations to Teflon, Wolverine and Evel, who displayed incredible stamina, and even more incredible backsides, riding most of the day. We are looking forward to our rest day tomorrow, and sunrise over the rock.
